Last winter Koura made their way back to Japan for the first time since Covid, with aims to dive into the bottomless pit of powder only Hokkaido can provide. And it did. Meanwhile back home in Switzerland they were met with the same conditions as when they left: the complete opposite to what they experienced overseas. This inspired them to search for further contrasts, but also similarities between these two places they hold so dearly – Switzerland, their home, with its towering Alps, deep valleys, tiny villages and old European architecture; versus the serene rolling hills of Hokkaido, and the dense, bustling and vibrant madness that is Tokyo. Joined by a colourful cast and crew – Nicholas Wolken, James Niederberger, Spencer O’Brien, Runar Hjörleifsson, Daria Fuchs, Atsufumi Mizuno, Aaron Schwartz, Elle Hindert and Nathan McBride — they delved into a cinematic exploration of two cultures and terrains on opposite sides of the world – that are intimately connected to them through snowboarding, yet beautifully distinct in their own ways. This short film represents more than a mere visual treat; it’s a dialogue of moments and impressions, a narrative that dances in the light and shadows of Elle’s camera lens, capturing the essence of their shared experiences.

The winter of 2022/2023 was absolutely incredible in Salt Lake City, Utah – home to K2 staff filmed Seamus Foster and team riders like Justin Phipps. Some early season clips in Utah gave the crew the “itch” to get out and about. Endless hours on Google Earth and some Japanese intel lead Jake Kuzyk, Justin Phipps, Antti Jussila, Mark Wilson, and K2’s media team into the rabbit hole, and tickets were booked to the city of Muroran. Muroran is a fishing village and port city located on the south side of the island of Hokkaidõ. Often referred to as Japan’s “north Island,” Hokkaidõ is storied for it’s terrain, deep snow, incredible food, and cultural warmth. The city of Muroran overlooks the Uchiura Bay – home to whales, dolphins, the Mt. Komagatake volcano. With a metro population hovering around 100,000 people, the city of Muroran and it’s surrounding villages is packed full unique terrain, textbook features, and aesthetically pleasing spots to snowboard on.

2024 Freeride World Tour Calendar

The countdown to the 17 th edition of the FWT is underway, with a new presenting sponsor – Peak Performance – and an action-packed calendar that includes an electrifying new stop in Georgia. Last year, the Freeride World Tour bid farewell to multiple FWT legends, and ushered in the next generation of freeriders that pushed the level to an all-time high...
Events, News December 2023
...

This year will include six stops, offering riders four competitions before the cut. Those who rack up
enough points will compete in the FWT Finals in Fieberbrunn and Verbier, and fight for the right to be
crowned World Champion. Relegated athletes will have the chance to re-qualify for FWT25 via the
FWT Challenger series, where they will face off against the top riders from the FWT Qualifiers.
Here’s what’s in store for FWT24…

Baqueira Beret ©Freeride World Tour / Dominique Daher

Stop 1: Baqueira Beret Pro, January 27 – February 1
The FWT kicks off in the Spanish Pyrenees for the third consecutive year, a location that never
disappoints with its epic terrain backed up by an incredible local crowd. Competition returns to the
Bacivér face, where we’ll get the first glimpse of the new class of rookies, and see if they can hold
their own against the established roster and returning champions.

Stop 2: Ordino Arcalís Pro, February 1 – 7
Back-to-back action in the Pyrenees as the FWT moves to neighboring Andorra, where Ordino
Arcalís will host the world’s best once again. Riders have been putting their mark on these mountains
since 2015, and will be treated to the incredible venue of the Pic de les Planes, a creative big
mountain haven with all the ingredients needed for playful, freeride action.

Stop 3: Kicking Horse Golden BC Pro, February 14 – 20
The tour then heads across the Atlantic to North America, returning to the ever-consistent snowpack
of British Columbia, Canada. The competition is always intense at Kicking Horse Golden BC, which
has hosted the world’s best since 2018. Action will likely be held on the formidable Ozone face, an
extreme venue providing ample opportunities for riders to send it large.

Stop 4: Georgia Pro, March 1 – 7
Nestled at the intersection of Europe and Asia, Georgia will host the last stop before the cut, and the
ultimate chance for riders to qualify for the FWT Finals. Georgia boasts a rich tapestry of traditions
and a culture renowned for its hospitality, as well as the imposing Caucasus Mountains, which contain
multiple peaks over 5,000 meters. The country has successfully hosted FWT Qualifier events during
the last two seasons, demanding the attention of the international ski community. Both Tetnuldi and
Mestia have emerged as prominent freeride destinations, offering vast big mountain terrain that
enjoys copious amounts of snowfall over the winter months.
The Cut will be after stop four, before the final two events that make up the FWT Finals. Athletes can
qualify using their three best results from the first four events.

Stop 5: Fieberbrunn Pro, March 12 – 18
After the inaugural event in Georgia, the best of the best will head to Austria for the first FWT Final, a
location that has been a tour mainstay since 2013. Competition returns to the ever-impressive
Wildseeloder face, a truly intimidating big mountain venue, where riders will enjoy a two-run format to
impress judges in their bid for the title.

Stop 6: YETI Xtreme Verbier, March 23 – 31
A freeride theater that needs no introduction, the Grand Finale – as always – will be held on the iconic
Bec des Rosses in Verbier. Dangerous snow conditions forced the event to be canceled last season,
but the FWT is ready to return to a place it has called home since 1996, and where the next four world
champions will be crowned.

Lock in these dates to watch the best freeride athletes push each other to the limits in the high
mountains. The roster will be announced soon, so stay tuned to FWT social channels and
www.freerideworldtour.com, or subscribe to the FWT newsletter to keep up with all the latest news.

It serves as a companion piece to our larger project, Sincerely Yours, which we produced for Ride Snowboards in Europe. With Greetings, the aim was to create a condensed, street-focused version with a unique vibe. The video is designed to be watched in less than 10 minutes, providing a burst of morning motivation before hitting the streets. We know that in a 30-minute project, some tricks could be overshadowed, so Ride Snowboards wanted to give them the spotlight they deserve. And of course, why not create an additional piece that showcases the incredible talent and excitement of snowboarding?
